Richard Buller
Richard Buller has been involved in winemaking since 1973, achieving gold medal success from his inaugural vintage. In 1975, aged 22, he assumed management of the Buller Wines Beverford Winery, initially processing more than 500 tonnes of fruit. Working with largely traditional infrastructure, Richard progressively expanded the operation to a capacity of around 6,000 tonnes. A highly skilled distiller, he was responsible for producing spirit used in the fortification of Buller’s fortified wines, as well as brandy production.
With the sale of Buller Wines in 2012, Richard built on his extensive experience in the Chinese market, establishing Richard Buller Wines and developing a substantial export-focused business. The brand quickly gained traction, particularly in China, where Richard’s long-standing relationships and deep understanding of the market supported strong growth.
In 2021, the Chinese government imposed import tariffs of up to 218.4% on Australian wine, bringing the export trade to an abrupt halt. Overnight, Richard Buller Wines was forced to cease operations in its primary market.
From this challenge emerged Dinah Wines, a return to hands-on, small-batch winemaking with a renewed focus on quality, flexibility and diversification. Drawing on decades of experience across large-scale production, exporting and distilling, Richard continues to craft wines that reflect both his technical expertise and his enduring passion for the industry.
Kate Buller
After leaving school, Kate Buller studied Tourism and Hotel Management at the International College of Management in Sydney. While she enjoyed the academic side of the course, her early career within the hotel industry did not fully capture her long-term interest. A subsequent move into the export shipping industry proved to be a pivotal step, providing Kate with valuable experience in logistics, documentation and international supply chains.
This background became invaluable when she returned home to work alongside her father at Richard Buller Wines, and later at Dinah Wines. Kate took responsibility for all export logistics, as well as overseeing production coordination and packaging, roles requiring precision, organisation and a strong understanding of both domestic and international markets.
With the gradual reopening of the Chinese market in 2024, Kate has once again been instrumental in managing export logistics, while also playing a key role in the branding and presentation of Dinah Wines. Equally comfortable at the cellar door engaging with visitors as she is working behind the scenes with export customers, packaging suppliers and shipping partners, Kate brings a versatile and modern skill set to the business, bridging tradition with contemporary wine marketing and logistics.
